The River of Faith

Few of us know that the Maha Kumbh Mela at Allahabad is the largest human religious gathering on earth. It is held once every 12 years and 100’s of millions of people bound by a common religious sentiment descend on the banks of the Sangam (confluence of the holy Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati rivers) at Allahabad during this congregation, which was the same reason which got the two of us bagpacking for this experience. With information just in a few printouts and maps we set off for Allahabad. During the journey itself we realised that we were the youngest travelling there. The next 3 days, we discovered that people have travelled miles together just for the Shahi Snan at the confluence. There being almost no sign of today’s educated society, but there surely was an overflow of the true Indian values – spirituality, belief, devotion, tradition, rituals! We consider ourselves lucky to be one of the estimated 4 crore + people having taken a holy dip at the Sangam on the 10th of February i.e. the 2nd and most significant of the 3 Shahi Snan’s in 144 years. A lifetime experience, hardly interpretable in words! Beyond understanding through photographs!
